Senators hope to include Alexander-Murray bill in funding package, with Trump's blessing

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said he is optimistic that the Senate will include the Alexander-Murray healthcare stabilization bill in its upcoming funding package, but only if President Donald Trump approves, according to The Hill.

Mr. Alexander and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., have been crafting their bill, which would fund cost-sharing subsidies and loosen ACA regulations for states, since September. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the Senate's second ranking Republican, also expressed confidence the bill could be included in the year-end funding bill. However, Mr. Alexander said this would require President Trump's approval.

"We're going to say, 'Mr. President, you asked us to do this. You don't want chaos, neither do we,'" Mr. Alexander said, according to The Hill. "'Sign it, take some credit for it, and give the American people a bipartisan win. I think they'll like it.'"

Republicans said the stabilization provided by the bill would balance out effects from a repeal of the individual insurance mandate. However, Democrats said they would block the Alexander-Murray bill if legislators keep the mandate repeal in their tax reform bill.
