Senate rejects straight repeal of ACA

Emily Rappleye -

Senators killed a proposal to repeal the ACA without replacement Wednesday afternoon in a 45-55 vote, according to Politico.

This vote comes after the Senate rejected the Better Care Reconciliation Act with two amendments Tuesday evening. The amended BCRA would have repealed and replaced the ACA.

The straight repeal vote was expected to fail, according to Politico. The Senate will now move on to a "skinny repeal" proposal, according to the report. The contents of this proposal are still in flux, but it would likely include the ACA's individual and employer mandates for health insurance coverage and the medical device tax, according to the report. The Senate will undergo more debate and then begin a "vote-a-rama" on amendments without debate. The final bill would need to be scored by the Congressional Budget Office before a vote. Republicans aim to vote by Friday, Politico reported.
