Scott & White Healthcare No Longer Hiring Smokers

Scott & White Healthcare, based in Temple, Texas, will no longer hire new employees who use tobacco, according to a Waco Trib report.

Scott & White joins a growing number of health systems that have stopped hiring smokers, including Baylor Health Care System in Dallas. Existing employees will not be affected.

"We take great pride in our standing as a recognized leader in healthcare and believe it is important that we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to world-class patient care," Scott & White CEO Robert W. Pryor, MD, said in a statement. "It would be difficult to be a credible role model if we support a habit that is proven to lead to disease, disability and death."
