Scientists from MD Anderson, Wash U earn Balzan Prize for cancer research

James Allison, PhD, of Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Robert Schreiber, PhD, of St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine, received the Balzan Price in recognition of their cancer research, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Dr. Allison and Dr. Schreiber focus their work on antibody treatments, which have increased the survival rate of patients with metastatic melanoma.

The Milan, Italy-based International Balzan Prize Foundation recognizes two researchers in science and two in the humanities each year. Recipients receive $790,000, half of which they must used for research.
