While congressional Republicans are shying away from healthcare ahead of midterm elections, conservative leaders outside of government are pushing again for ACA repeal.
In an open letter published by conservative political news source The Daily Signal, former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and 35 other conservatives called for the revival of the Graham-Cassidy bill, a failed ACA repeal bill that would have ended Medicaid expansion, installed Medicaid block grants, eliminated cost-sharing subsidies and tax credits, and ended the mandates to buy health insurance.
"Obamacare is broken and cannot be fixed, and there is a better way forward," the letter reads. The letter outlines the signatories' three main goals for healthcare: to lower costs and increase choices, give states more flexibility, and create guidelines so patients have more private coverage options.
"We believe this path could get majority support in Congress and show the American people that members understand their distress. We are inspired by the willingness of so many to work creatively toward providing this down payment solution to begin addressing Obamacare's problems," the letter states.
