Republicans backpedal on ACA repeal as midterms approach

Republicans do not plan to emphasize healthcare in the midterm elections, The Hill reports.

This may be because candidates want to distance themselves from Republicans' legislative record with ACA repeal, according to the report. Public opinion of the law improved when Republicans attempted to repeal the law last year.

Now candidates like Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., plan to play defense on healthcare and focus offensively on other issues. Mr. MacArthur told The Hill, "I am focused on improving healthcare in any way we can; I'm not looking to tilt at windmills."

Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., told The Hill, "Frankly I think we should be running more on our positive issues, starting with tax reform."

Conversely, Democrats are expected to focus in on the issue during campaign season.
