Rep. Steve Scalise returns to Congress following surgery for injuries sustained during shooting last summer

U.S. House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., returned to Washington, D.C., Monday after undergoing surgery Jan. 10 to treat injuries he sustained during a shooting at a congressional baseball game last June, CNN reports.

Mr. Scalise returned to Capitol Hill to vote on the short-term spending bill, which is expected to pass the Senate and reopen the government after a three-day shutdown.

Though he said he still has months of rehabilitation ahead of him, he said he hopes to soon "walk properly and hopefully … without crutches," according to the report. He said he also plans to run for a sixth term and for re-election as House majority whip.

Mr. Scalise and three others were injured after a man opened fire during a congressional baseball game in Alexandria, Va., in June 2017. Mr. Scalise suffered a gunshot wound to his left hip, CNN reports.
