Poll: US seniors oppose government interference in healthcare

A large majority of U.S. seniors — 83 percent — believe physicians should be able to write prescriptions and provide services without government interference, according to a poll of nearly 2,000 voters over age 65.

Polling was conducted by Morning Consult and sponsored by Bring The Vote Home, an initiative to empower elderly and disabled Americans to vote.

In particular, the poll found senior voters oppose CMS’ new “pre-claim review” policy, which requires physicians to get approval from a government contractor before prescribing Medicare home healthcare services for a patient. Eighty percent of seniors polled felt this process would likely delay care and roughly three-fourths felt it would increase the cost of Medicare and increase out-of-pocket costs.
