Physicians express support for Erlanger CEO in letter to the board

A dozen physicians employed by Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System sent a letter to the health system's board expressing support for CEO Kevin Spiegel, according to the Times Free Press.

The show of support came after physicians on Erlanger's 11-member Medical Executive Committee unanimously approved a no-confidence vote in several of the health system's executives, including Mr. Spiegel, in May. The committee's letter raised concerns about operational issues, including understaffing and policies that cause overcrowding in the emergency department and operating rooms.

The 12 physicians from Erlanger Medical Group who signed the June letter said they "wholeheartedly support Mr. Spiegel and his team." Several of the physicians also voiced support for Mr. Spiegel during a board meeting June 27.

"His accomplishments over the last six years or so that he's been here have been amazing," said Argil Wheelock, MD, according to the Times Free Press. "The letter was written because we care. We care about Erlanger, we care about our patients and we care about administration."
