Philadelphia Healthcare Workers Vote to Strike Tomorrow

Unionized hospital and healthcare workers in Philadelphia are planning a rally Wednesday and conducting a vote to strike, according to a union news release.

The workers are members of District 1199C of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees – American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The release did not include an estimate of how many workers are expected at the rally.

Union leaders have unanimously endorsed the rally, releasing the following statement: "We'll be rallying not only to support their fight for fair contracts, but also to oppose the austerity budgets, anti-union laws and anti-worker measures being pushed by the right wing in Harrisburg."

The union is currently in contract negotiations with more than a dozen Philadelphia hospitals, including Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital and Temple University Health System.
