Partners CEO Dr. David Torchiana reveals some details of Trump meeting

Emily Rappleye -

In a brief interview with The Boston Globe, Partners HealthCare President and CEO David Torchiana, MD, said the ACA was not discussed when he and three other health system CEOs met with President-elect Donald Trump last month.

"He's not going to decide what he does on that one [the ACA] based on talking with four guys from academic health systems, I don't think," Dr. Torchiana told The Boston Globe.

Dr. Torchiana met with Mr. Trump Dec. 28 in a closed door meeting at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla. Other health system CEOs present at the meeting included Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic President and CEO John Noseworthy, MD; Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine CEO Paul Rothman, MD; and Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Toby Cosgrove, MD.

Rather than discussing healthcare reform, the meeting instead focused on biomedical research and veteran healthcare, according to the report. This was unsurprising considering Mr. Trump needs to fill positions related to those issues, Dr. Torchiana told The Boston Globe. Dr. Cosgrove was said to have been unofficially offered the opportunity to lead the VA, but he turned it down to retain his post at Cleveland Clinic.

Though Dr. Torchiana did not vote for Mr. Trump, he said he is open to meeting with the President-elect again because he appeared "very interested and very engaged" during the Dec. 28 meeting, according to the report.
