Over 700 healthcare facilities recognized for LGBTQ+ equality leadership

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Health Equity Index saw a record number of 747 health facilities recognized as top performers or leaders in paving the way for LGBTQ+ equality.

The 2022 report, published March 28, evaluated the participating 906 healthcare facilities on various elements of LGBTQ+ equity, including policies and staff training, patient services and community support.

Out of the 906 healthcare facilities evaluated, 496 earned the badge, "LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader" meaning they received top scores in each evaluated category, and 251 facilities earned the "Top Performer" designation, meaning they scored between 80 and 95 out of 100 overall. More than 93 percent of the participating healthcare organizations have completed over 200,000 hours of staff training on LGBTQ+ patient-centered care and 176 of the facilities were first time participants in the index survey.

"The Healthcare Equality Index, at its core, strives to ensure LGBTQ+ people are protected and affirmed by their healthcare providers and feel safe seeking services," said Tari Hanneman, director of health and aging at The Human Rights Campaign. "Our Health Equity Index active participants are truly pioneering the healthcare industry by implementing robust, comprehensive LGBTQ+ inclusive policies that hopefully, because of their work, will become standard practice."
