Nikki Haley to resign: 3 things to know

Nikki Haley, President Donald Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, said she will resign by the end of 2018, according to The New York Times.

Here are three things to know:

1. Ms. Haley told reporters during an Oval Office interview Oct. 9: "It was a blessing to go into the U.N. with body armor every day and defend America. I'll never truly step aside from fighting for our country. But I will tell you that I think it's time."

2. President Trump, who was on-site for the interview, said Ms. Haley told him about her decision to resign about six months ago. Ms. Haley told him she wanted to take a break after completing two years with his administration, according to the president.

3. President Trump plans to name her successor in two or three weeks, and said he hoped Ms. Haley would take on a different role in the administration. For her part, Ms. Haley said she plans to campaign for President Trump's re-election, according to The New York Times.
