New Nurses Cost More to Hire, Face Tougher Job Market

As hospitals continue to tighten budgets in order to compensate for financial losses, newly graduated nurses may find it tougher to find a job, according to The Rebel Yell.

Recent statistic reported in the UNLV Center for Health Information Analysis' Nevada Health Care Quality Report showed Nevada hospitals alone saw financial losses totaling $65 million in 2011. Lack of profits, in conjunction with higher costs to hire new nurses, paint a bleaker picture of the job market for nursing graduates.

The University of Nevada in Las Vegas and Summerlin Hospital Medical Center have partnered to launch a Dedicated Education Unit program, which allows nursing students to gain more experience with bedside nurses in the hospital setting. University officials hope the program will boost clinical nursing education for nursing students and prepare them for the competitive job market.
