New Mexico hospital board isn't holding CEO accountable, city commissioner says

Morgan Haefner -

A city commissioner criticized the board of Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, N.M., for not adequately overseeing the hospital's CEO, according to the Silver City Daily Press.

During a meeting of the Grant County Commission, commissioner Alicia Edwards said, "The board of trustees is doing very little to hold the administration accountable — it seems there is no accountability around basic business planning and benchmarks around strategic planning." She did acknowledge that the hospital's CFO Richard Stokes has helped improve GRM's financial reporting.

However, a continued vacancy of nearly 80 positions — an "alarming" portion of those open positions being directors, according to Ms. Edwards — signals that GRM's board isn't overseeing CEO Taffy Arias and her administration appropriately, she said.

According to the Silver City Daily Press, Ms. Arias disagrees.

"We have remained positive and honest about everything we do, but because some decisions to grow do not meet some of the commissioners' desires or special interests, the hospital administration is continually insulted and grossly unsupported," she said.
