Nashville General CEO deserves 'legitimate chance,' but must be 'evaluated critically,' mayor says

Nashville (Tenn.) Mayor David Briley offered his support for Nashville General Hospital CEO Joseph Webb, DSc, but said the chief executive must be evaluated more critically to discern whether he is following through on his proposals to improve the safety-net hospital, according to the Tennessean.

In an interview with the Tennessean June 26, Mr. Briley said the Hospital Authority Board must keep a closer eye on Dr. Webb going forward.

"Because of the issues that arose in the last year, I think Dr. Webb has not really had a full, clear chance to try to implement his vision for improving the hospital and I think he deserves the opportunity to do that. But I think he needs to be evaluated critically, consistently and periodically to make sure he is following through on his proposals to improve the hospital" he said.

Dr. Webb received his first performance review earlier this month despite serving as CEO of the institution since 2015. In their review, hospital board members praised his ability to boost employee morale, but criticized his leadership, communication and financial management of the facility.

Following the performance review, board members offered Dr. Webb a three-year contract with the potential for a 10 percent incentive raise each year. Dr. Webb has until June 28 to accept the contract.

Mr. Briley also told the publication he plans to meet regularly with board leadership, and announced three new nominees and one renomination for potential board members.

Five members of the hospital's oversight board resigned in May and June, leaving the 11-member board down to six people. Two of the individuals that resigned said they did so in protest of the board's decision to extend Dr. Webb's contract, which they claim was done abruptly and before Dr. Webb's performance review had been finalized.
