Mercy Health creates policy against prescribing medical marijuana

Mercy health system, based in Chesterfield, Mo., issued an official statement June 26 that its physicians will not recommend medical marijuana to patients, the Springfield News-Leader reports.

In Missouri, patients are required by state law to receive certification from a physician before applying for a medical marijuana identification card, according to the report. In a statement, Mercy said it "believes there is insufficient medical and scientific research on the benefits and risks of cannabis products as part of medical treatment. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn’t determined the safety or efficacy of cannabis."

The Springfield News-Leader notes this is not unusual for large health systems that work closely with the federal government.
