The Office of Management and Budget is set to release a plan in late June to consolidate low-income programs into HHS and potentially rename the agency, among other structural changes to the federal government, according to Politico.
The plan is the outcome of a March 2017 executive order requiring the OMB to create a report on how to make the government more efficient. Details of the plan have largely been kept under wraps as it is still being finalized, but "sources with knowledge of the plan" provided some details to Politico. Potential proposals include:
- Moving food stamps from the Department of Agriculture to HHS
- Changing the name of HHS, likely to include "welfare" or emphasize low-income assistance
- Cuts in the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department
