Kentucky VA medical director resigns amid whistle-blower retaliation allegations

Alia Paavola -

Martin Traxler, the director of Louisville, Ky.-based Robley Rex VA Medical Center resigned Feb. 2, the same day the Office of Veterans Affairs asked for his removal, according to the Louisville Business Journal.

Mr. Traxler, who assumed his leadership role at the Louisville-based VA hospital in November 2014, was accused of "whistleblower retaliation conduct unbecoming of a senior executive and lack of candor," VA Press Secretary Curtis Cashour wrote in an email to the Louisville Business Journal.

The press secretary did not provide any additional details about the complaints brought against Mr. Traxler, but said VA Secretary David Shulkin, MD, "has made clear that VA will hold employees accountable when they fail to live up to the high standards taxpayers … And that's exactly what we moved to do in this case."

The current director at Lexington (Ky.) VA Medical Center, Emma Metcalf, RN, MSN, will take over as acting director.
