Kansas microhospital transition to affect 145 employees

St. Luke's Health System, a faith-based, nonprofit health system based in Kansas City, Mo., will transition its Cushing Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan., to an emergency department-anchored microhospital model, affecting 145 employees, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.

St. Luke's Cushing Hospital is a 54-bed facility serving Leavenworth County in Kansas under a traditional hospital model. It will transition to a microhospital model in December.

St. Luke's Health System currently has seven microhospitals across the Kansas City metro area, including in Leawood, Olathe, Shawnee and Overland Park, Kan. The new microhospital in Leavenworth will feature eight inpatient beds as well as an emergency department, according to email responses the provided to the Journal.

St. Luke's Health System told the newspaper: "Our Cushing Community Hospital will remain an independent St. Luke's entity and continue to offer cardiac rehabilitation on-site, a cardiology physician clinic, as well as laboratory and radiology services including X-ray, CT, mammography and ultrasound."

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with Kansas states that 145 employees of St. Luke's Cushing Hospital will be affected by the transition.

The health system said it is "working closely with impacted employees to identify other opportunities for those who wish to remain with Saint Luke's. We are committed to placing as many of these highly-skilled caregivers and professionals as possible."
