Iowa's top health official abruptly resigns

Jerry Foxhoven, director of Iowa's Department of Human Services, resigned without explanation on June 17 at the request of Gov. Kim Reynolds, the Des Moines Register reports.

He was working to rebuild DHS after budgetary issues led to 1,000 layoffs, and he also oversaw state institutions for mental illness, among other responsibilities.

Ms. Reynolds appointed Gerd Clabaugh to serve as director in the interim. Mr. Clabaugh joined Iowa's Department of Public Health five years ago.
