Investor hype around bitcoin distracts from blockchain's potential, says Microsoft's Hector Rodriguez

In this special Speaker Series, Becker's Healthcare caught up with Hector Rodriguez, Microsoft’s worldwide health chief information security officer.

Mr. Rodriguez will speak during the Becker's Hospital Review 4th Annual Health IT + Revenue Cycle Conference on "The Top Issues for CISOs Today," at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. Learn more about the event and register to attend in Chicago.

Question: Can you share your best advice for motivating your teams?

Hector Rodriguez:  I focus on empowering my team members to do their best work but with a well-defined and consistent purpose in place. Making sure that everyone understands the core "Triple/Quadruple Aim" objectives of healthcare organizations is critical.

Q: What is the most exciting thing happening in health IT right now? And what is the most overrated health IT trend?

HR: Emerging technologies for artificial and augmented intelligence coupled with machine learning and bots is opening up a myriad of data-driven opportunities and solutions. Blockchain is also a very exciting technology with lots of potential, but investor hype coupled with the 'bitcoin FOMO," for fear of missing out, is distracting and misleading [from its potential].

Q: What do you see as the most vulnerable part of a hospital's business?

HR: The hospital supply chain and trading partner or business associate network is extremely vulnerable to cyberattacks, privacy challenges and overall data loss. There is rightly a lot of attention on the clinical systems and flows, but if a hospital's supply chain is compromised, that facility will struggle to deliver care and services.  For example, if the medication ordering and dispensing systems are attacked and the flow is disrupted, then patients may not get their medications.
