Intestinal issues land HHS Secretary Azar back in hospital

HHS Secretary Alex Azar was hospitalized for a second time this month related to his diverticulitis, according to The Hill.

The intestinal condition is caused by infection or inflammation of pouches in the colon. Mr. Azar was initially hospitalized last weekend in Indiana and subsequently discharged. He has now been readmitted for more treatment and observation, HHS spokesperson Caitlin Oakley said in a statement cited by The Hill.

"Secretary Azar has been and will continue to be in regular contact with HHS leadership, the White House, and members of Congress as he remains fully engaged with the responsibilities of his job," Ms. Oakley said. "Secretary Azar hopes to be back in his office at HHS as soon as possible, consistent with his needed recovery and the recommendations of his doctors, and we will continue to provide updates as available."

Various media outlets reported Mr. Azar postponed a hearing scheduled for April 19 regarding his agency's budget request.
