Intermountain Healthcare launches Leadership Institute

Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare will welcome the inaugural class of its Leadership Institute in October in an effort to help cultivate ethical, value-based leaders.

Charles Sorenson, MD, president and CEO emeritus of Intermountain, will lead the institute, which is designed for experienced healthcare leaders to receive mentoring and training focused on principles of vision, character, personal effectiveness and selflessness.

"Leading large systems takes more than a smart, ambitious leader; it takes an ethical, values-driven one who is able to navigate extremely complex situations," Dr. Sorenson said. "The Leadership Institute will address this need by providing our participants with an immersive, interactive training and ongoing mentorship."

The curriculum will include topics such as engaging physicians and administrators in evidence-based care and the neuroscience of optimal leadership. The faculty will include leaders from institutions such as Boston-based Harvard Business School and Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The leaders will meet for two separate week-long sessions — once in October and once in January.

"We will also create a strong alumni association within the group, to encourage lifelong learning and collaboration," Dr. Sorenson said. "Alumni will be eligible to join other graduates from leading health systems for continued learning through periodic meetings and online social connections."
