Mobile, Ala.-based Infirmary Health System will close its 124-bed Infirmary West Hospital by the end of the month, according to a Mobile Press-Register report.

Infirmary Health President and CEO Mark Nix said officials decided to close the hospital after a year-long evaluation of hospital utilization and community healthcare needs. "The passage of the Affordable Care Act challenges hospitals and health systems to re-evaluate how to best allocate their resources to serve the needs of our community," Mr. Nix said in the report.

After the hospital closes Oct. 31, some patients will be transferred to Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, and services will be transferred to other facilities. Hospital officials are helping employees find jobs inside and outside the Infirmary West, according to the report.

The system operates three other acute-care hospitals, two rehabilitation facilities, three outpatient facilities and more than 30 medical clinics across 11 counties in Alabama.
