Hundreds of Nurses Slated to Picket UMass Memorial Today

Hundreds of nurses are prepared to picket outside UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., today, protesting what they consider to be unsafe staffing levels, according to a Worcester Business Journal report.

The nurses are members of the Massachusetts Nursing Association, which has been in labor contract negotiations with UMMC for nearly a year, according to the report. The union claims the hospital has gone from having excellent staffing levels to the worst in the city for some units.

The union is also highlighting a federal report released by CMS last month that showed UMMC was among 10 hospitals in the state to receive the highest penalties for patient readmissions post-discharge, according to the report.

The union is asking UMMC to retract its demands for benefits concessions and agree to nurse-to-patient ratios that are contractually guaranteed.
