How to break down silos and foster collaboration across the C-suite: 3 notes

A lack of interdepartmental collaboration not only results in a deeply fragmented, incohesive structure, but will also prevent an organization from reaching its full potential, financially and otherwise.

During a session titled "Strategy and Innovation in the C-suite: Working Together" at the Becker's Hospital Review Health IT + Revenue Cycle conference in Chicago in October, two healthcare executives from Sonoma Valley Hospital discussed ways to build a culture of collaboration across the C-suite.

The two panelists were Fe Sendaydiego, CIO at the Sonoma, Calif.-based, 51-bed hospital, and Michelle Donaldson, BSN, the hospital's chief strategy officer.

Here are three key points they made about collaboration within the C-suite:

  • Rather than keeping departments siloed, look at each as a "business service unit": all interconnected parts of one larger whole, working together toward the same goals.
  • Those goals should be developed together, with each executive having input as to how their department will play into the organization's overall strategy and how they can work with their peers in the C-suite to chip away at the stated goals.
  • When a certain business goal affects multiple departments, productive collaboration will improve the entire organization's efficiency by saving each department from unnecessarily repeating the same tasks.
