House Republicans growing more receptive to reinsurance bill

Opposition from House Republicans has been one of the main impediments in passing a reinsurance bill, but it seems lawmakers may be warming to the proposal, according to The Hill.

Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Bill Nelson, D-Fla., first proposed the reinsurance bill in September, and it gained traction in December when Congressional leaders agreed to support the legislation in return for Ms. Collins' vote for the GOP tax bill.

Rep. Ryan Costello, R-Pa., is leading the new tide of reinsurance support in the House, mostly because the proposal is short-term and would not lock the GOP into spending beyond 2020.

"That reflects the political reality that we are not going to be doing some large, sweeping healthcare bill in the next year," said Mr. Costello, according to The Hill. "I am optimistic that it would be under serious consideration for inclusion in the omnibus [spending bill]."
