House Democrats ask Ryan to hold vote on gun research

Leo Vartorella -

Seven House Democrats sent a letter Wednesday to Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., calling for a vote to increase the CDC's funding for gun research.

Democrats Carolyn Maloney, N.Y., David Price, N.C., Mike Quigley, Ill., Rosa DeLauro, Conn., Nita Lowey, N.Y., Robin Kelly, Ill., and Stephanie Murphy, Fla., signed the letter, which aims to try and repeal the Dickey Amendment. That law restricts the CDC's ability to research the intersection between gun violence and public health.

"Research on the root causes of this important public health concern will better inform policymakers and the American people on how best to address this epidemic. We respectfully urge you to take up legislation that would allow the [CDC] to study the issue of firearms safety and gun violence prevention," the letter's authors write.
