The Governance Institute's 2013 Biennial Survey of Hospitals and Healthcare Systems delved into the governance practices of nonprofit health systems, including average compensation for board chairs and expenses for board education.

The following are 15 statistics based on their findings.

Annual amount of cash compensation for the board chair
(Based on 10 respondents, 17.5 percent of the survey pool)
Less than $5,000 — 10 percent
$5,000 to $9,999 — 10 percent
$10,000 to $14,999 — None
$15,000 to $19,999 — 20 percent
$20,000 to $29,999 — None
$30,000 to $39,999 — 10 percent
$40,000 to $49,999 — 20 percent
More than $50,000 — 30 percent

Including memberships, conferences, retreats and travel

$0 — 1.7 percent
$1 to $9,999 — 12.1 percent
$10,000 to $19,999 — 15.5 percent
$20,000 to $29,999 — 13.8 percent
$30,000 to $49,999 — 19.0 percent
$50,000 to $75,000 — 15.5 percent
More than $75,000 — 22.4 percent
