The number of hospital CEOs who left their roles in 2019 is 31, down nearly 33 percent from the 46 who left within the same time last year, according to a report by executive outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
Hospital CEOs are leaving at a lower rate compared to those in the healthcare and products industry, which saw CEO turnover increase year over year. In 2019, 66 healthcare/product CEOs left their positions year-to-date, up about 29 percent from 51 in the same period last year.
To date across all industries, 253 CEOs — or 40.4 percent — left to take another position within their company, usually as a chairperson or another C-level role. Fifty-four CEOs found new positions in other companies, while 178 retired. Eight CEOs reportedly left amid scandals so far this year.
