Hospital-Based Practices Targeted by Practice Management Companies

Publicly traded practice management companies are targeting hospital-based practices in specialties such as hospitalists, neonatologists and anesthesiologists, according to a report by American Medical News.

IPC The Hospitalist Company, based in North Hollywood, Calif., acquired 14 hospitalist practices in 2010 and eight in 2009. “We are actually having groups call us, although we do have an outreach program,” said Adam Singer, MD, chairman and CEO of IPC.

Mednax Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the umbrella for Pediatrix Medical Group and American Anesthesiology, bought 14 hospital-based physician practices in 2010 and 11 in 2009. In December alone, Pediatrix purchased three-physician Neonatology Associates in Kingsport, Tenn., and UltraHealthCare, a six-physician pediatric hospitalist practice in San Antonio.
