HMA Receives Subpoenas From Office of Inspector General

Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates disclosed yesterday that it has received subpoenas from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The company said it is cooperating with the government and is in the process of responding to the subpoenas, which HMA and certain subsidiaries received May 16 and July 21.

The May subpoena requested information on physician referrals, along with ownership and management at HMA's whole-hospital physician joint ventures. The July subpoena requested information on emergency department management, including the use of Pro-Med electronic physician documentation software.
