HHS secretary visits Atrium Health COVID-19 testing site

Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health hosted HHS Secretary Alex Azar May 21 at one of its COVID-19 testing sites in Charlotte.

The testing site was opened in partnership with the Charlotte Motor Speedway on its grounds in late March. The health system's coronavirus testing sites have tested more than 35,000 residents to-date.

Mr. Azar toured the grounds and was informed of plans set in place for the 2020 Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race, a four-day competition beginning May 24. Atrium Health's physicians will e screen for fevers and COVID-19 symptoms of drivers, crew and others working the event.

In addition to learning from Atrium Health executives about the health system's patient care approaches during the pandemic and its work to provide access to coronavirus testing for underserved and minority communities, Mr. Azar toured Atrium Health's new MED-1 mobile hospital unit, featuring 14 acute care beds and a two-bed operating room.
