HHS drafts strategic plan: 4 things to know

Morgan Haefner -

HHS released a draft strategic plan for fiscal years 2018 through 2022 last month.

Here are four things to know.

1. HHS updates its strategic plan defining its mission, goals and how it measures progress every four years.

2. The National Review identified new language added to the plan's drafted organizational structure. The draft states, "HHS accomplishes its mission through programs and initiatives that cover a wide spectrum of activities, serving and protecting Americans at every stage of life, beginning at conception." The "beginning at conception" language is an addition to the previous plan.

3. The draft plan features five strategic goals, compared to four in the current plan. Those include:

  • Reform, strengthen and modernize the healthcare system
  • Protect the health of Americans where they live, learn, work and play
  • Strengthen the economic and social well-being of Americans across the lifespan
  • Foster sound, sustained advances in the sciences
  • Promote effective and efficient management and stewardship

4. The agency is accepting online, emailed, mailed and faxed comments on the draft through Oct. 27.
