Henry Ford, Beaumont Health Systems Stop Hiring Smokers

Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System and Royal Oak, Mich.-based Beaumont Health System announced today that they will stop hiring smokers beginning in January, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

In addition to screening job applicants for nicotine, the systems will also ban the use of tobacco products on their campuses. Both initiatives go into effect Jan. 1, 2013.

Another large Michigan health system — Detroit Medical Center — adopted a smoker-free hiring policy in June.
