Hennepin County Medical Center to cut up to 275 jobs to balance budget

Ayla Ellison -

Minneapolis-based Hennepin County Medical Center's workforce will be reduced under a budget approved Wednesday by the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners, according to the Star Tribune.

The safety-net hospital will eliminate up to 275 full-time positions next year to balance its budget. The 275 jobs represent about 4 percent of the hospital's 6,800-person workforce.

HCMS CEO Jon Pryor, MD, told county commissioners Wednesday the hospital faced financial challenges in 2016, according to the report. He said the hospital's expenses outpaced its income by $11 million this year. The loss was attributable, in part, to HCMC serving a high number of uninsured and low-income patients, he said.
