Healthcare weighs in on Trump's HHS pick

President Donald Trump has selected former pharmaceutical executive Alex Azar as his nomination for HHS secretary.

Here is how seven healthcare organizations reacted to the pick.

American Hospital Association President and CEO Rick Pollack expressed confidence in Mr. Azar:

"We are confident that his extensive background in business, healthcare and medicine distinguishes him as a uniquely qualified candidate for the vacancy. The expertise garnered from his career in the private sector and prior public service at HHS as deputy Secretary will prove to be particularly valuable in addressing the serious challenges facing our nation's healthcare system today."

Federation of American Hospitals President and CEO Chip Kahn referenced his past experience with Mr. Azar:

"I have worked with Mr. Azar in the past and think he is the perfect pick for the times. His steady hand of leadership will be critically important as the deliberations over health reform and the many healthcare quality and cost issues proceed."

CMS Administrator Seema Verma tweeted, "Congrats to fellow Hoosier Alex Azar on being nominated @HHSGov Secretary! Alex is an experienced leader in the healthcare community who will work hard to advance @POTUS' agenda!"

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted, "Congratulations to Alex Azar for being @POTUS' choice to lead @HHSGov. Alex brings decades of health care experience. @POTUS continues to recruit smart & capable leaders focused on Making America Great Again!"

Association of American Medical Colleges President and CEO Darrell Kirch, MD, also congratulated Mr. Azar:

"In this position, he will oversee many of the federal agencies that play a crucial role in how the nation’s medical schools and teaching hospitals are able to educate and train the next generation of doctors, care for the nation’s most vulnerable and complex patients, and conduct medical research that brings hope to countless Americans."
