HealthAlliance to Close Kingston Hospital in New York

Kingston, N.Y.-based HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley has shared a plan with state officials to close Kingston Hospital and move all operations to its Benedictine Hospital, which is located across town.

HealthAlliance said officials from the New York State Department of Health and Office of Mental Health were supportive of the preliminary plan, which stems from system efforts to reduce expenses and improve efficiency.

HealthAlliance President and CEO David Lundquist said the system plans to retain as many services as possible but will reduce the number of licensed beds from the 300 currently shared between Benedictine and Kingston. Benedictine would also become a secular hospital as a result of the consolidation, with no limitations on reproductive services.

In May, HealthAlliance faced the decision of closing Kingston or Benedictine. The two hospitals merged in 2007, consolidating their services so those offered at both hospitals pre-merger were only offered at one facility post-merger.
