HBR names world's best-performing CEOs: Which healthcare leaders made the list?

Emily Rappleye -

Just 10 healthcare leaders made the Harvard Business Review's list of the world's best-performing CEOs.

To make the list, CEOs must have led an S&P Global 1200 company for more than two years, without being convicted of a crime or arrested. That left 895 CEOs who were evaluated on both financial and nonfinancial performance. HBR scored each CEO on their financial performance using daily financial data, country-adjusted total shareholder return, industry-adjusted total shareholder return and change in market capitalization. They scored CEOs on environmental, social and governance using two firms that collect such data: Sustainalytics and CSRHub. The combined metrics filtered out 100 top CEOs.

Here are the 10 healthcare CEOs who made HBR's list this year.

  • Lars Rebien Sørensen, Novo Nordisk (Denmark) — No. 1
  • Michael Mussallem, Edwards Lifesciences (U.S.) — No. 20
  • George Scangos, Biogen (U.S.) — No. 21
  • Lars Rasmussen, Coloplast (Denmark) — No. 24
  • Jean-Paul Clozel, Actelion (Switzerland) — No. 59
  • Leonard Schleifer, Regneron Pharmaceuticals (U.S.) — No. 67
  • Ken Thiry, DaVita (U.S.) — No. 82
  • Haruo Naito, Eisai (Japan) — No. 87
  • Christopher Rex, Ramsay Health Care (Australia) — No. 88
  • Neil Patterson, Cerner (U.S.) — No. 90

Note: Larry Merlo, CEO of CVS Health, was ranked No. 60 on the list, but HBR put him in the retail category.
