Former Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker was appointed to the board of Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System amid a board-wide refresh, The Baltimore Sun reports.
The entire UMMS board will have new leaders by 2020 under a new law. The law was passed after The Baltimore Sun uncovered widespread conflict-of-interest issues on the health system board level.
Mr. Baker was appointed by Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, a Democrat, and previously served on the board for the University of Maryland Medical Center's Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He also has crisis management experience. He took his position at Prince George's County after his predecessor was found guilty in a bribe scheme, according to the report.
Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan appointed 11 new members to the board in June and will make additional appointments by the end of the year. Democratic House Speaker Adrienne Jones will also select a board member. The state Senate must confirm all members.
