Former HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell heads for American University

Former HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell plans to lead Washington, D.C.-based American University as its first female president beginning June 1, according to a report from the Washington Business Journal.

Ms. Burwell comes to the academic position after leading HHS since 2014, where she oversaw a significant portion of the ACA rollout. She told the Washington Business Journal she was attracted to the position at American University because of the institution's focus on innovation.

Ms. Burwell brings a variety of leadership experience to the position. She previously served as the director of the Office of Management and Budget under former President Barack Obama, where she also served as deputy director during the Clinton administration. She served as deputy chief of staff to former President Bill Clinton and chief of staff to the Treasury secretary during the Clinton administration. She has also served as president of the Wal-Mart Foundation and COO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Development program.
