Former HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell joins board at Florida Blue parent

GuideWell Mutual Holding Corp., the parent company of health insurer Florida Blue, named former HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell to the company's board of directors June 11.

Ms. Burwell, who began leading HHS in 2014 when many of the ACA's changes went into effect, will join an insurer that has performed particularly well on the health law's individual marketplace.

Ms. Burwell currently serves as president of Washington, D.C.-based American University. Prior to her tenure at HHS, she was the director of the Office of Management and Budget. She also spent 10-plus years with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and previously served as president of the Walmart Foundation.
