Danville (Va.) Regional Medical Center organized 13 walks that community leaders are saying have had an impact on local crime, according to a WDBJ7 report.
After a physician, Randolph Neal, MD, was shot on his walk home from Danville Regional, the hospital decided in February to start organizing the walks, which aim to promote peace and reduce crime in the Danville community, according to the report. Community leaders quoted in the report say the walks have had a positive impact on local youth.
Danville Regional Medical Center CEO Alan Larson said that it is difficult to measure any tangible difference the walks have made over the past four months, but that its online portal for community involvement, DRMC Cares, received more than 1,000 positive comments each week the hospital hosted a walk, according to the report.
The walks have temporarily been stopped until the fall, for scheduling reasons, according to the report.
