Cooper Green Mercy Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., is considering layoffs from three departments to save up to $6 million, according to a Birmingham News report.

The county-owned hospital is expected to turn its final cost-saving plan over to Jefferson County's finance committee tomorrow. Layoffs are slated to occur in the hospital's nursery, pharmacy and nursing administration departments. Roughly 12 physician contracts could also be eliminated to save $1 million of the total $6 million, according to the report.

Hospital and county officials said specific reduction numbers are subject to change since the reduction plan has not been finalized. County commissioners have been told the hospital needs roughly $14.4 million to avoid deficits, according to the report. Approximately $3.5 million of that is needed immediately for past-due invoices. The remaining $10.9 million is needed to eliminate an operating deficit carried into the current fiscal year.
