Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove, MD, said the Graham-Cassidy healthcare bill "is going to threaten the financial viability of a lot of hospitals across the country," according to CNBC.
The bill, proposed by Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Bill Cassidy, R-La., will likely result in reduced funding for hospitals, Dr. Cosgrove said during an interview Thursday with CNBC's "Closing Bell" program.
The fact the Congressional Budget Office has not yet analyzed the bill also poses significant issues, Dr. Cosgrove noted.
The CBO previously stated it could take several weeks before the agency can adequately assess the bill's impact on the budget deficit, insurance coverage and premium costs. However, officials said they aim to release a basic analysis of the legislation next week.
A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told Politico Sept. 20 the Senate is expected to vote on the proposed legislation next week.
Senate Republicans have until Sept. 30 to pass a healthcare bill under the budget reconciliation rule. The rule allows the Senate to pass proposed healthcare legislation with a simple majority vote.
