Citizens Medical Center Ends Hiring Ban on Obese Employees

Staff -
Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, Texas, has ended its ban on hiring workers with a body mass index of 35 or higher, according to a news release by the Obesity Action Coalition, which was contacted by the hospital following the policy change.

Texas law prohibits discrimination in hiring for race, age and religion, but weight is not specifically protected. The hospital initially defended its decision saying employees' image should project someone whose responsibility is promoting health.

Joe Nadglowski, president and CEO of the OAC, said he was pleased with CMC's decision to reverse the policy, calling it "a proactive step toward reducing weight bias."
