Chamber of Commerce CEO vows to fight single-payer healthcare

Alyssa Rege -

The chief executive of one of the largest lobbying organizations in Washington, D.C., said the organization will use all of its resources to fight all single-payer healthcare proposals that come out of Congress, The Hill reports.

Thomas Donohue, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, addressed the issue during his annual "State of American Business" address on Jan. 10.

"We also have to respond to calls for government-run, single-payer healthcare, because it just doesn't work," Mr. Donohue said.

Several Democrats in the U.S. House have pushed for a vote on single-payer healthcare proposals like "Medicare For All." However, such proposals have yet to be introduced.

The Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest lobbying groups in Washington. In 2017, the organization spent $82 million on lobbying efforts, more than any other organization.
