CEO of Miami's Jackson Health Will Forgo Bonus if Layoff Plan Saves Money

Carlos Migoya, the CEO of Miami-based Jackson Health System, has promised to donate his entire bonus to Jackson's foundation if his layoff plan saves the health system money this year, according to an op-ed Mr. Migoya wrote in the Miami Herald.

Mr. Migoya announced the elimination of roughly 1,115 Jackson Health jobs late last month. Since then, he said critics have accused him of demanding layoffs to line his own pockets — a charge he is aiming to disprove by promising to decline his bonus. If the system makes money this year, Mr. Migoya's bonus will go to Jackson Memorial Foundation and be set aside for the renovation of labor and delivery rooms.

He also outlined the various ways the layoff strategy will elevate the patient experience at Jackson and preserve quality. He said the system has fewer patients, meaning readjusted staffing levels on a department-by-department basis will better reflect current patient volumes.

The system is also creating 350 new part-time flexible staffing positions based on increases or decreases to patient volume. This counters union demands for guaranteed work weeks for full-time employees, which can limit flexibility, according to the op-ed.

Mr. Migoya firmly denied any changes to patient care resulting from the layoffs. "We will never compromise patient safety just to save money, because every patient is priceless," he said in the op-ed.
