Catholic Health CEO: 'I always want to have that feeling of an intern, I want to learn'

Buffalo, N.Y.-based Catholic Health President and CEO Mark Sullivan carries this one item from his previous work experience in his wallet to remind him to continue to learn from his peers, according to The Buffalo News.

Mr. Sullivan told the publication he continues to carry his ID card from his internship at a hospital in 1993.

"[The ID card] keeps me grounded where I started and never to lose sight of being a good listener. So I always want to have that feeling of an intern, where I want to learn. I don't want to assume anything," he said.

Mr. Sullivan took over the executive leadership role in 2018. He is now in charge of the $1 billion organization with roughly 10,000 employees. He told The Buffalo News he sees his role as paving the way for the institution to become a healthcare leader by providing quality care to the community as a whole.

"I think being the CEO of a $1 billion corporation, my obligation is much bigger than building healthcare of bricks and mortar, it's about how do we get out and take care of the community," he said.

"For me … it's a humble honor to care for somebody during their most vulnerable time. … What other way to wake up each morning and know that that's what you're doing? [If] I keep that internship mentality, I'm always appreciative of the people that are doing that."
